5 Things Not to Say to a New Mom

“My (daughter/sister/friend’s) baby slept through the night early on.”

I’m really happy for you, but that’s not really helpful to me, a new mom, who is struggling to keep it together on a few hours of sleep strung together here or there.

“Your baby doesn’t look like you at all!”

Why would you even say this. Even if it’s true.

“Are you going back to work soon?”

Most moms don’t want to rush back to work. Some have to go back sooner than they would like. Most women who use FMLA take 12 weeks.

“I could never have someone else raise my children.”

When a new mom returns to work, she absolutely needs someone at home to care for her baby. That’s all there is to it. Moms make a choice that works for their family, so just support it.

“When are you going to have another baby?”
This is even a common question during pregnancy. Let’s get through this pregnancy and    baby before we even start thinking about the next one.
